Success or failure, Ramgopal Varma marches ahead. His films may not be doing wonders at the box office but that does not dissuade Ramu from trying his hand again. He is back with Phoonk, a horror film that rides on irrationalism with the catchline, “it is superstition till it happens to you”. The film introduces Kannada actor Sudeep to Hindi cinema.

Not in the league of K. Asif’s perennial favourite, Sanjay Chhel’s film brings the hit pair of Mallika Sherawat and Rahul Bose together after the success of Pyar ke Side Effects.

Replete with comic sequences, original and remixed music, the film is set in 1993 and relates the story of a small down drama company.

For good or worse, Mumbai always inspires our filmmakers. Right from the time Mohammed Rafi-Geeta Dutt sang “Ae dil hai mushkil jeen yahan…ye hai Bombay meri jaan”, the metropolis has never been far from the big screen.

The latest is a take on the blasts that rocked the city and brings together an ensemble cast worthy of a dekko.
