The symbolism of creation

From being a fruit to being an idea of growth, it is a long journey

Banana symbolism
B. Karuna’s art show at the Shrishti Art Gallery is not as much about her art as it is about exploration of a single theme and symbolism. Except for three works in colour, the rest are pencil sketches which try to overwhelm the mind with their
imagery and symbolism.
The take off point for the exhibition is Karuna’s interest in banana as her favourite fruit that is nutritious as well as cheap. “Only later I explored the symbolic nature of the fruit that is about growth, creativity and nature,” says the artist. The results are on show at the gallery where the pen and ink sketches show the feminine form obsessed with the banana and the creative symbolism it implies and encapsulates. “I was in a hostel and would see lot of the women and girls and hear their conversations and could follow the changes in their lives in their physical self. That’s the phase I have captured in a lot of my drawings,” says the artist.
The geometry is perfect, the pen and pencil strokes but the jarring thing about the drawings is the series of symbols that jangle for attention.
It is like the whole clutter of symbolism has been poured out onto the canvas. And the symbols don’t speak to each other, they are just there for the sake of it.
