Splendours Vikram Sampath’s book deals with the glories of Royal Mysore
In one of the most definitive accounts of the Mysore dynasty, author Vikram Sampath, sketches the long and fascinating regime replete with wars, palace intrigues, romance, valour and deceit in his latest book named, “Splendours of Royal Mysore&
#8221;.
From its genesis in 1399 to the age of glory under Raja Wodeyar to the spineless monarchs who let the kingdom slip into the hands of the powerful ministers, the book revisits the ups and downs of the dynasty.
The evening commenced with a Carnatic vocal recital by the author. It was followed by the screening of a short documentary film on Mysore. Vikram works in the retail banking division of a leading bank in Bangalore and writes columns for leading publications. The book was released by T.N. Chaturvedi, the former Governor of Karnataka, at the Oxford Bookstore in Connaught Place.
According to Vikram, the growth of Mysore as the cultural capital of South India alongside Tanjore in areas of classical music, dance, folk traditions, painting and literature has been traced in the book.
“The brief interlude under Hyder Ali and his heroic son Tipu Sultan saw Mysore emerge as a veritable nightmare for the East India Company and since then it became an important destination in the history of India,” said the budding author. When asked about the target audience of the book, he said, “This is a book for history lovers and people who are artistically inclined and recognise art in any form.”
