Culture on show

Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Friday film shows

Sangeet Natak Akademi has a sizeable number of fine films spanning various cultural subjects in its archives, many of which are SNA productions. Every Friday, it rolls out one from the kitty for the discerning audience. This September too, it started with Semmangudi, an hour-long film directed by Bhaskar Chandavarkar on the great Carnatic vocalist.

This Friday, it is the turn of Ramayana in Koddiyattam and Kathakali and Parvati Viraham: Mani Madhav Chakiar as Ravana. While the first one is an SNA production (1973), the second one is directed by Kavalam Narayana Panikkar.

On September 19, one can view Vijay Tendulkar’s Ghasi Ram Kotwal in Marathi, directed by Jabbar Patel. The last Friday of the month will feature a half-hour-long film on Ustad Bismillah Khan.

All the screenings start at 5 p.m. at SNA’s Museum of Masks situated on the ground floor of Rabindra Bhawan.
