Munish
He was the man who had essayed the role of the popular Jat character Udham Singh on MTV nearly nine years ago and rocketed to fame. Munish Makhija, the man behind Udham Singh, reminisces about his first shot at enacting the popular character. “When the character went on air, I never expected it to be so popular. The popularity can be gauged by the fact that even now I have youngsters asking me about Udham Singh. I enjoyed playing that character immensely.”
Ask him why and how he landed up essaying Udham Singh’s role and he says, “It was the result of an ad campaign launched by the channel during the general elections in the late 90’s, which asked youngsters to cast their vote. Udham Singh was launched as an offshoot of one of those campaigns.” He adds, “Initially, auditions were held and candidates were called. I was one of the judges. After we failed to find suitable candidates, my friends suggested that I should also audition. I auditioned and got the part.”
About his virtual disappearance from the small screen after Udham Singh, Munish is defensive, “I did not disappear from the scene completely. I had guest roles in films like Paap, Dhoka etc. I worked with Tehelka.com for some time. I eventually moved to Goa and started a lounge bar.”
He is currently the host of a reality show series Cash Cab, where customers are asked questions that could help them win Rs. 20,000. It is a quiz show and customers are also provided some lifelines, if they are unable to answer the questions.”
