Ideal spot This gang of boys have a blast

Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering and Technology

The hangout: Canteen ‘chettu’ (tree).

Rush hour: 1.30 p.m.

Where it’s at: It is a small tree opposite the canteen (separate for boys and girls) .

What’s to love:

Remember the song ‘Godaari gattundi, gattu meeda chettundi’… the hangout spot of this engineering college is somewhat similar. There is no Godavari river but this all-boys gang believes the ‘gattu’ and ‘chettu’ boost their chit-chat powers. “Our conversation is typical like any other young group’s,” says Prashanth Reddy. So the boys don’t ask questions like ‘How many marks did you get’ or ‘Which movie did you watch?’

For them, it is ‘What is your attendance’ and ‘Which is the latest movie you have downloaded?’

World of ‘phekus’

After IPL (Indian Premier League) and ICL (Indian Cricket League) here’s IPL (Indian ‘Pheku’ League) vying for attention. “Pheku’ is a common Hyderabadi word used for someone who brags. Who ever tries to hog the limelight and impress the lecturer is a ‘pheku’ for us,” says a cheerful Kiran. Teams like Knight Riders with 11 ‘phekus’ is very popular.

The energetic group has even announced ‘pheku’ awards and there have been a few deserving winners too. ‘Khatron Ke Pheku’ and ‘Nee Pheku Bangaram Kanu’ (based on Akshay Kumar’s movie ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’ and hit TV show ‘Nee Illu Bangaram Kanu’) are their latest projects but the team is still working on the modalities.

Hi-tech view

The tree presents a good view of the hi-tech city. With fresh air for company, the setting is ideal for points to ponder.

“We sit here and wonder when Hitech city will call us,” says Pranay Chandra Reddy. As the students are in their fourth year, it is placements and girls (not in that order though) which are the hot topics.

Breaking promises

The youngsters count on the place to make their quarterly excursions. “We generally plan on short holidays here but there will be one party pooper who breaks his promise and we end up not going anywhere,” says Vishwas and adds, “Today, we had planned to go to Nagarjuna Sagar dam but the plan fell flat.”

What’s not to love:

Since the tree is just opposite to the canteen, there are a thousand eyes watching you. “We cannot sit here for longer hours as our lecturers can easily find us,” says Prashant and adds, “It is impossible to chill out here during the rainy season as the place gets filled with slugs.”

Alternatives:

TT room and the basketball court.
