Thank you for the music

Katrina Kaif tells NIKHIL VARMA she is thrilled with her role as a cellist in Yuvraaj

Pretty as a picture Katrina Kaif: ‘The music is soulful and magical’

Katrina Kaif, the ravishing super model-turned-actor started her career in Bollywood with Kaizad Gustad’s “Boom”. The movie failed at the box office, however, Katrina was noticed and offered many modelling assignments.

Katrina decided to shift base to Mumbai. Initially, filmmakers were hesitant to cast her in films, owing to her lack of knowledge of Hindi — she is half Kashmiri and half British.

However, over the years, she has emerged as one of the top actors in Bollywood, having starred in a plethora of hits including “Namastey London” and the recent “Singh is King” recently.

She has also won many awards such as the British-Indian actor award at the Zee Cine Awards and the female style icon at IIFA this year. Apart from Hindi films, she has also acted in a handful of Telugu and Malayalam movies.

After six consecutive hits, the petite Katrina is on the top of the heap and is all excited about her latest film, “Yuvraaj” opening this Friday.

The film has her cast opposite the love of her life, Salman Khan and is directed by Subhash Ghai.

‘“Yuvraaj’ was an amazing experience for me. It was a new concept and the sets and locations are very different and on a much larger scale compared to my earlier films.

It was a magnificent atmosphere. Moreover, the music is soulful and magical.” Kat’s favourite song from the film is “Tu Muskura”. “I used to spend most of my time during breaks from shoots listening to the song over and over again. It is truly a brilliant composition and a melodious song.”

About her character Katrina says: “I play a musician, who is part of an orchestra. She loves the orchestra as it lets her play music, thereby providing her a chance to let her emotions out, be it happiness, frustration or sadness.

She is very passionate about music. She is a well-to-do girl and does not require the orchestra to make ends meet, but is very committed to her orchestra troop.”

Ask her if she is similar to the character in real life? Katrina smiles, “Not really. The role was given shape by Subhash Ghai.

He helped me a great deal in understanding the role and helped me better my performance.”

She is currently working on a Rajkumar Santoshi film with the nation’s sweetheart, Ranbir Kapoor. She says, “I am enjoying myself working in this movie.”

Katrina feels privileged at being compared to beautiful people. “It is very flattering. In many ways, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. I think Rekhaji and Kareena, as far as contemporary actors go are very beautiful.”

On whether she prefers acting or modelling, Katrina rather carefully says: “I have enjoyed acting and modelling a great deal.

I feel that acting scores a bit over modelling owing to the fact that it offers different roles and is more exciting.”

Katrina is currently involved in films with a host of directors ranging from Prakash Jha to Priyadarshan. “The best part is that all these directors have their different styles of operation, styles and also make very different movies from each other. It will be brilliant learning experience.”
