Grill mill - 'Nizhalgal' Ravi

You began your film career as a hero (Nizhalgal), but now you are doing more of character roles?

This is not because of age.

I wanted to be different and went in for roles with substance after my first film itself.

Remember I was the hero in Adi Velli, Durga and Nan Pudiche Mappilai.

Does acting give you satisfaction?

Certainly. I derive satisfaction from what I do. I don’t want to be typecast in any role. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone.

What is the best appreciation you have ever got?

When I was asked to lend my voice to Amitabh Bachchan in “Kaun Banega Crorepathi”, I was floored. Later, I got a call from the mega star, appreciating my effort. I also did a couple of ad films in which he acted. So if at all Amithji is to talk in Tamil then it must be my voice.

Do you think you have achieved what you wanted to in the field?

I came here to work as an actor like Muthuraman. I didn’t aim to be a hero at all. So when I got a hero’s role, imagine my joy. From 1988 to 1992, I got a chance to act in several films.

So, how is the going?

Last month, I had two releases. My three latest movies are Dham Dhoom, Sakkarakatti and Jeyam Kondan. Don’t you think the going is good as far as I am concerned?
