Pristine power A wardrobe basic the white shirt can be worn any way, any how, anywhere

While fashionistas the world over have been toasting the little black dress, what about the other fashion necessity, the white shirt? Who can forget the divine George Clooney wandering about the corridors of law in his crisp white shirt in the legal drama Michael Clayton? And there is of course Daniel Craig hurting and hunting for Vesper Lynd’s killers in a snug white shirt in Quantum of Solace.

“When you say white shirt, the only thing I can think of is Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction says the gentleman designer Raghavendra Rathore with a laugh. Oh yes, there was that one too. The statuesque Ms Thurman, the boss’s moll, Mia Wallace, going out to Jack Rabbit Slim’s with ultimate cool dude, Vincent Vega (a dreamy John Travolta) in a white shirt and black cigarette pants.

“The white shirt is the salt in fashion,” says Rathore. “It is one of the basics in a wardrobe. Like all stylish things, a white shirt is simple, basic and uber stylish.”

Rathore says with contemporary styling favouring less fabric, “a trim silhouette works. Since a white shirt is something you would wear close to your body, it would be best fitted and in natural fabrics, preferably cotton.”

Style guru Anamika Khanna who has shown on the ramps of London, Paris, New York and Los Angeles also comes out strongly for white shirts.

“The white shirt is being constantly reinvented. I don’t believe in trends. It is all about you, so could wear it as a dress shirt, a fitted shirt, a draped silhouette, in cotton or georgette, day or night, any way, any how, anywhere.”

Ashish Soni, hailed as “one of New York’s new discoveries” has a thumb rule for white shirts. “Stop wearing them as soon as they are not white,” says the designer known for his deceptively simple design philosophy.

As far as silhouette and fabric goes, Ashish believes in “To each their own. You could wear your boyfriend’s oversized white shirt. You could wear a fitted one. It is very versatile so you could wear it with anything, with jeans, a long or short skirt, or you could team it with jeans and jacket for a semi-casual look.”

So the jury is out and whatever your style whether style diva or rock chic, grunge or little miss goody two shoes, secret agent or corporate lawyer, make sure your wardrobe is well stocked with those pristine whites.
