In her own world

British designer Danielle Scutt on her bold clothes

Casually attired in black, her blonde mane overwhelming her face, Danielle Scutt looks barely out of college. But at 27 the British designer has created ripples in the West with her “powerful” and “bold” clothes. Though merel y a couple of seasons old in the circuit, Scutt invites attention with her fresh approach to designing.

First visit

The young designer was in the Capital recently to showcase her Spring Summer ’09 collection at the Chivas Fashion Tour. A trifle rattled by the attention, Scutt says, “This is my first visit to India. I see this as an exciting opportunity.”

Supermodel Naomi Campbell appeared in a Scutt creation on the cover of Vogue Brasil recently. Gwen Stefani too posed in Scutt’s clothes for the V Magazine. However, the talented designer is now open to the idea of doing business from India. “We have a few meetings lined up,” she says. For the Chivas show, she brought to India 26 outfits from her Spring Summer ’09. Chiffons, organza, lycra and denims threw up a mixture of “everything light” for spring and summer.

Designing was something that came to Scutt naturally. “The opportunity to do things interested me,” says the cryptic lady. Her career has also taken her to countries she would not have got to visit otherwise. She points to her trip to India as an example. Scutt is keen to familiarise herself with Indian fashion and designers. “I will get to see their work now,” she says. Though Indian designers are no strangers to the London fashion scene, Scutt never really got the chance to follow their work.

“When I am in London, I am in my own bubble,” confesses Scutt.
