Round and About

(Bits and pieces from the reporters’ diary that did not make it to the main stories)

Kamal in the queue!

A week ago, at the celebrated Apple store in the Big Apple, it was business as usual. Geeks lined up for their appointments with the Geniuses. For the uninitiated, the service counter at the Apple Store is called the Genius Bar. The Apple store is the temple of technology that die-hard devotees of Macs throng, a glass-monument located in Downtown Manhattan, right by Central Park.

The Genius Bar functions with appointments and yours truly had registered online and booked a slot in advance. Waiting in the queue at the designated hour, I bump into one of the biggest stars of our cinema. As I am all ears taking in the man’s wisdom, a lanky geek pats him on the shoulder and asks him if he’s part of the queue. And I couldn’t help thinking, “Dude, he’s the guy people queue up and pay to watch. His name is Kamal Hassan.”

No picture please

How do you get into the party pages? We’re not quite sure, though it seems to involve ‘having a good time’. How do you not get into the party pages? Ah, there we can help you. Two of our reporters were doing the socialite thing at a recent la di dah evening when the inevitable happened. A photographer approached them and asked them to pose for a “party pic”. But even as they were helpfully turning on their most glamorous smiles, one of them mentioned she worked for The Hindu. At which point the photographer recoiled with horror, and firmly put his lens cover back in place. Clearly, journalists rank right down there with party girls who repeat their outfits (gasp) thrice.

Oh brother

Shilpa Shetty was recently in Chennai to launch a fashion accessory store. She kept the media waiting for over an hour at the press conference, and it appeared that all the waiting around and topping up on caffeinated beverages got a little too much for the photographers. Before she could even step onto the stage, a large pack of photographers and cameramen went there and kept her at bay. Shilpa refused to come out till her bodyguards clad in tight black t-shirts managed regain the stage.
