Being human

‘The Angel of God’ by Jyothi Menon throws light on personal change and growth

HUMAN RELATIONS Jyothi Menon

Jyothi Menon’s first novel is a lot like her non-fiction books. Although giving glimpses of life in various parts of the world, it is yet another vehicle for Jyothi’s views on transformation.

‘The Angel of God’ (published by Cedar Books) borrows ideas from various scriptures (for example: ‘What have you brought into the world that you are so scared of losing’ from the Gita), but is far from what the title suggests.

Changing lives

The protagonist has all the frailties and strengths that go with being human. By force of will, Moosa breaks out of squalor and rises to become the head of a business empire. He has links with the underworld, and so, remains a closet angel in the life of Bhaskaran, one of three young men he mentors.

Moosa changes their lives by first being their friend. Despite its overpowering central theme, ‘The Angel of God’ manages to be more than a motivational book. There are vignettes of life in Kerala, Mumbai and West Asia, with the action constantly shifting among them. There is always a cursory commentary on society and business in each of these places.

There is also a subtle attempt at understanding the Malayali, in his land and away. With Moosa as her mouthpiece, Jyothi gives voice to her understanding of personal change and how growth can be achieved in a business enterprise.

An HR professional for 15 years, Jyothi’sbooks are influenced by her work. Priced at Rs. 195, the book is available at all leading bookstores.
