PET PALS
Uma Radhika tells us how her discovery of joy began with a kitten.
Our cat is black with copper tints, oversized ears and a bushy tail. She’s the newest family member in our household. We discovered her one August morning as an abandoned and hungry creature, mewing desperately and fighting for life. We brought her into our garden and then into our homes and our hearts.
We decided to call her Joy because ever since she’s come into our lives, we’ve been walking around with broad smiles on our faces and our home reverberates with giggles.
When she creeps along the ledges, only her eyes and ears are visible: our very own Black Cat Commando. Joy believes in attacking everything from shoelaces to her own shadow and it’s enormously entertaining to watch her do leaps and somersaults in the process.
Very often, she has us in splits when she’s up to these comical antics. For some reason, Joy thinks of any chore such as sweeping, dusting or swabbing as a personal challenge.
A stuffed monkey and three tiny bouncing balls are her best friends. When our toes weren’t available, the stuffed toy bore the brunt of her nibbling. As for the bouncing balls, we’d like to think she could give Beckham a run for his money.
When she isn’t playing a clumsy game of football, she’s chasing butterflies and dragonflies or climbing trees just so she can look down at us mischievously from the top branch.
She has a knack for getting lost frequently and when she does, we turn into a search squad and look for her.
This pretty woman is now six months old and has a tendency to posture proudly, sometimes sending a haughty glance or two in our direction.
She has an elusive quality about her but if you happen to pass by Shiva Sundar Apartments in Velachery, do take a moment to peep over the wall. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of Joy lurking among the flowering bushes.
Albert Schweitzer once said: “There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats”.
Our Joy has proved him right.
HERO OF THE WEEK
College student Kavin Arasu founded TAGS (The Animal Guardian Society) with his friends Inchara, Nithya, Hari, Shiyamili, Priyaa, Indra Devi, Ganesh Babu, Vivek and Suresh. The group regularly rescues puppies from the street and finds homes for them. Kavin’s friend Arun says: “The team puts this social cause above its own interests and works relentlessly towards giving the canines a better life”. Here’s to the young heroes!
