Chat time The panacea to beat the blues

What’s to love: In the heart of the city is this campus that exudes the fragrances of oils and herbs. Although there are no grassy environs or lush canopies, the Government Ayurveda College campus has a certain charm.

A group of students are seen chatting on a long corridor outside the classrooms. “We do not have any green spots to hang out so our hangouts are the various parapets that dot our college,” says Ashraf, a third-year student.

Dinoop, a final-year student, laments the lack of greenery however. “It would have been nice if we had a couple of shady trees; it would have provided us with better spots to get together with friends,” says Dinoop, who adds that he has developed a fondness for the veranda over time.

Alternatives: The canteen, which serves hot and spicy food, is also a popular hangout for the students, says Dinoop.

According to Sharmin, another third-year student, the library is a popular hangout although it is on the same floor as that of the Principal’s office.

“It’s a secure spot. It is not easy to bunk classes as there are just a few students, so the library is a safe hangout as we can hide behind a pile of books. Here we sit and discuss all and sundry under the sun,” she says.

Bini, Sharmin’s classmate, echoes her thoughts. She adds that the ladies’ waiting room is a hot spot for girls as they preen for the next class.

Harijith, a budding writer, derives inspiration from his secret hangout. After much coaxing, he shows us his muse – the view from the rooftop of the main building. “You can see the whole city from here. Even Bheempally, although we are located miles away. The city seems to be draped in green,” he says. Nazeeb prefers the newly painted college bus. “It’s a great place to squeeze in a nap in between classes. It is also a safe place when bunking a class.”

What’s not to love: “Our campus is by the main road, so it is never quiet,” says Ashraf as Bini and Sharmin add that the lack of greenery gives them less of a chance to be out in the open.
