All that jazz

The Duende Quartet will perform for a cause

GLOBAL SOUNDS The Duende Quartet

The Unwind Center and the U.S. Consulate-General of Chennai present the Jazz Revival 2009, partnering with the Madras Anchorage Round Table-100 (Member Round Table, India). This event is to raise awareness and funds towards the Widow Rehabilitation C entre being constructed in Vayaloor, Mahabalipuram. The Madras Anchorage Round Table-100 is an organisation of non-political and non-sectarian young men between the ages of 18 and 40. With a long-term objective of “Freedom through Education”, the organisation reaches out to underprivileged children in rural India. The Table now supports the Widow Rehabilitation Centre being constructed by Acts of Mercy.

The Centre will provide 32 homes for widows to stay and learn a vocational skill such as tailoring and papad making. The children of these widows will also benefit from free education while being accommodated at the Centre. The annual jazz festival by the Unwind Center has hosted artistes from the U.S., Denmark and the U.K. over the years. This year, the festival presents Latin-jazz virtuosos The Duende Quartet from Baltimore, brought to India by the U.S. Consulate-General.

The Duende Quartet is devoted to playing Latin jazz in the style of Mongo Santamaria, Cal Tjader and Willie Bobo with leanings to the Blue Note sound of the 1960s.

The quartet features Harry Appelman on the piano and keyboards. Appelman is a winner of a 2008 Latin Grammy along with Latin jazz group Afro Bop Alliance. Josh Schwartzman on the bass is best known as founder, bassist and contributing arranger and composer for Rumba Club since the renowned group’s inception 22 years ago. Sam Turner, percussionist, has worked with Frank Sinatra, James Brown and others. Mark Merella also on the percussion, has performed at the White House and the Kennedy Center.

The Duende Quartet will perform at the Museum Theatre on March 13 at 7 p.m. The concert will feature music from their self-titled album. Donor passes of Rs. 500, Rs. 250 and Rs. 150 are available at all Unwind Centers, Landmark stores and branches of Fruitshop on Greames Road.

Yodhakaa, the second band for the evening, is an experimental band which performs traditional Sanskrit shlokas with contemporary musical arrangements. This Chennai band features John Antony on the guitar, Siva on the darbuka, Keith Peters on the bass, vocals by Subiksha and vocals and slide guitar by Pradeep with Naveen on the flute.

The Quartet will also host a workshop for jazz enthusiasts and musicians on March 12 between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Unwind Center, Adyar. This event is strictly by invitation only.
