Food bytes

Meet Evil Chef Mom and her four little sous chefs. In descending age order the team begins with Rich, her husband. “Hates to cook but loves to eat, will not barbeque, has some strange food rules.” Then comes Katie, “16, wicked, smar t, number one sous chef and baker.” Drew is thirteen years old and “eats everything in sight. Main dishwasher, doesn’t cook.” There’s Will, “12, main grill guy, second dishwasher, garbage boy.” And finally Nancy; “10, baker, cook, potato peeler, the baby.”

And why is she evil? “Good question. By most accounts, I’m a pretty nice gal... although a little accident prone but because I’m a mom to four kids, Evil Chef Mom means I sometimes have to run my house like a Marine brigade, which translates to... ‘at any one time, someone is not happy’ and that obviously, in my kids eyes, makes me mean and evil.” Born, raised, and still living in Stockton, California, right now she’s house hunting. Which means she’s also looking for the kitchen of her dreams. “Kind of country, kind of modern, kind of Martha Stewart meets Ina Garten... all me. Floating shelves so you can see all my Fiestaware. Glass storage jars always at the ready with flour and sugar. A skylight in my kitchen so I have an abundance of light. Terracotta pots with little bits of moss flecked on the sides filled with rosemary, cilantro, and basil waiting for me to pick. And the most important thing of all a permanent place to put a cake stand. Not a fussy or fancy cake stand. A cake stand that screams me. A cake stand that will feel at ease no matter what I put on it whether it be a fresh loaf of bread, warm cookies or a cake. It has to do many things this cake stand. I have high hopes in finding one just as much as I have high hopes in finding a home and kitchen to put my cake stand in.”
