Cool spaces Students of the Sanskrit college like to hang out at the ‘Sundarimukku’

What’s to love: Although the campus may not look impressive from the outside, enter the charming campus of the Government Sanskrit College and you will be impressed by the lush greenery that surrounds it. With mammoth trees and thick bushes doting pathways… it is a green paradise. The campus is also rich in ‘hangout’ spots. A popular spot among the students is ‘Sundarimukku,’ which is located near the college’s gate that opens onto a short cut to the Cantonment Station Road. “Sundarimukku is a great lookout point to watch the women students go by. That is why it is called ‘Sundarimukku,” says Lovejith S.S., a third-year student of Vedantham.

Adds Lovejith’s friend, Aneesh S.:“Many pedestrians, usually women, use this short cut. It is fun to meet them at ‘Sundarimukku.’” For Padmakumar P.V., a final year student of Jyotisham, it the ‘union room,’ (where the students’ union meets) and the nearby cement seats that are the top favourites. “It is located near the play ground. One can get a complete view of the campus, especially the main block. It is also a great spot to watch matches that happen on the ground.”

While bibliophile Kiran L. enjoys spending time at the library, Gokul L., a gourmand, loves hanging out at Rajannan’s thattukada, near Sundarimukku, or at the Kudumbasree-run college canteen, near the ‘union room.’

What’s not to love: “There is a sewage pipe that leads through ‘Sundarimukku.’ On some days the stench is so horrible that we have to abandon the place,” rues Gokul.

The college campus also houses departments and offices that are not connected to the college. “Sometimes, we feel that there are more outsiders than there are students,” says Kiran. While Lovejith is against the tree-pruning spree on the campus, Padmakumar wishes for a proper cricket ground on the premises.

Alternatives: Though there are many hangout spots on the campus, the students vote for Saphalyam shopping complex and the University Library as favourites. As the campus is in the heart of the city, it is easy for the students to frequent nearby theatres to catch the latest movies.
