A slice of life

‘The Song of Sparrows’ is a fable about the dangers of greed

UTV World Movies brings to you a deep humanistic story set among society’s under-privileged . “The Song of Sparrows” starring Reza Naji, Maryam Akbari, Kamran Dehghan and Hossein Aghazi and directed by the Oscar-nominated Majid Majidi, is set on an Iranian ostrich farm outside Tehran, where Karim (Naji) has just been fired for letting one of the flightless, long-necked birds escape into the hills. Unemployment couldn’t come at a worse time. His oldest daughter Haniyeh’s hearing aid has dropped into a sludge-filled pit outside their home and requires repair. In Tehran to fix the hearing aid, Karim is mistaken for a motorcycle taxi driver; an unforeseen opportunity he embraces in earnest because his fares pay cash and lots of it. But the people and material goods that he deals with daily transforms Karim’s generous and honest nature, much to the distress of his wife and daughters. It is up to those closest to him to restore the values that he had once cherished. “The Song of Sparrows” was Iran’s nomination in the foreign film category at the 81st Academy Awards. Reza Naji won the Best Actor Silver Bear award at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival. It was also nominated for the Golden Globe award in the Best Foreign Language Film category among 53 foreign competitors.

“The Song of the Sparrows” will be telecast on March 28 at 8.30 p.m. on UTV World Movies.
