NATIONAL COLLEGE

The Hangout: Stone benches under the trees

Rush Hour: Before and after class hours and at free time.

Where it’s at: In front of the Kamakotti block

What’s to love: “ Vaada maapillai, Singarathopeilla, kambam kul kudikalaama? Aerum suetila, cool drinks kudikalaama? Sweet puffs bale bale, muttai puffs bale bale. Bakeryil bale bale, thanyia thina kudadhu…”

This is the latest song from the latest film ‘Vilu’ that is creatively changed and customized by the group of students – Maveeran Marsingpettai Mandavettu Manoharan, Vada Venkatesh, Kosu Sheela, Blade Bency, Dunguvaar Dardia and Kiruku Kirthika of National College sitting leisurely on a stone bench, their favourite hangout. The students congregate here, as they have the double delight of unwinding without any interruption and the shade from the canopy of trees dotting the place.

An array of topics from T.V. / Radio shows, politicians, elections, voting, issues plaguing the world, films due for release, music and sports are discussed and debated here. They relive their favourite class room pranks, which have landed their friends in trouble. Changing the silent mode in the mobile phones of friends stealthily before calling them much to their shock is of course doing the rounds now. The students are tech savvy when it comes to both work and play. They share information online regarding their studies. Taking mobile photos of friends on the campus is done with great enthusiasm and shared on a regular basis with everyone by e-mail. A phone conference with friends or even online chat sessions and emailing friends sitting next to them at the data processing centre or at the library in the campus, each activity is laced with fun and prank!

Satish, Palanichamy and Rajendran of Ist Year B.A. History reveal that they have decided to meet up during the centenary celebrations of the college, which has already completed 90 years. Gladis, IInd Year M.Com student, appointed as the tourism minister by her friends, leaves no stone unturned to discharge her duties. Sitting thoughtfully on the bench, she quite successfully plans all group activities which mostly include shopping or trips to Kalannai, Puliancholai, etc.

What’s not to: Conversations about smoking and drinking are strictly banned as the students here stand up against these issues.

Alternatives: They also hang out at the lunch shed that is opposite to the Science block as the can enjoy the dual pleasure of talking and eating.
