Empanada

A savoury pastry of Spanish origin, possibly Galician, it has now spread throughout the Spanish-speaking world, the Caribbean and the U.S.

The dish comes from the Spanish empanar, meaning to coat or wrap in bread.

The filling can be fish — cod, tuna, sardines — or meat: pork, ground beef or chicken in a tomato, onion and garlic sauce. The variations are endless; eggs, cheese and vegetables can also be combined with the fish or meat to cater to a wide variety of tastes.

Empanadas are typically baked, though in rural areas they are often fried.
