Seated discussions Students of LBS Institute of Technology for Women taking a breather on the benches
What’s to love: If students of LBS Institute of Technology for Women are asked what’s special about their college campus, they will collectively point to the adjacent building outside the campus – the Poojappura Central Prison. In fact many may even boast that theirs is the only college in the city which shares a wall with a prison.
And this could be a reason why the college terrace is packed, even during college hours. “Up here, we get an unobstructed view of the prison and its premises, a view we have only seen in movies,” says Anu S.R., a sixth semester student.
Echoes Riya Francais, her classmate: “It was curiosity to the jail that first brought us on to the terrace. Soon, it became our hot spot.” Other favourite hotspots include the college podium and cement benches under lush canopies.
Says final-year students Anupama S. and Asha Jayachandran, “The cement benches, shade-giving trees and small parapets at the side… it is impossible not to love the ambience. We rush here whenever we get a chance.” A swing enhances the charm of the place. While first-year student Mariya Kuruvila and final-year student Gayatri Subrahmanyan prefer the new cement benches placed by the PTA at the rear of the main block due to the privacy it offers, Manju M. chooses the elevator as her cosy nook. “My friends and I love the ride up and down. It is during this quick trip that we crack jokes and share secrets,” says Manju with a grin.
What’s not to love: “I am totally in love with the college. However, I do wish there weren’t any stray dogs or mongooses on the campus,” says Riya.
While Anu dislikes the noise emanating from the construction work on the campus, Aswini Jayachandran longs for a campus free from creepy crawlies.
Alternatives: If all the cement benches on the campus are full, Neethu S. Nair heads to the third floor. There by the hallway, she takes in the view of the college ground. “There is also a gentle breeze up here,” says Neethu. Manju, however, enjoys sitting on the stairs near the badminton court.
