Camp in the Nilgiris

LEISURE Rediscover the hills and revel in Nature

The history of the Nilgiris as a famous hill station began in Kotagiri, when John Sullivan, the legendary district collector of Coimbatore who discovered Ooty, built the first modern house there in May 1819. He was the first to introduce potato, c abbage and other English vegetables and various flowers and fruit trees in this region, and flora that adorns and sustains the hills.

To commemorate the 190th year of the Sullivan Memorial, summer camps will be organised at and around Sullivan Memorial in May 2009. The camps are open to children (below 14) accompanied by parents or guardians. Each camp will be for two days (on weekends). Participants will be picked up from Mettupalayam at 7 a.m. on the first day and dropped back there at 7 p.m. the next day. Each camp will have about 20 participants. Exclusive tours for other groups can also be arranged.

The camp schedule covers a visit to the Nilgiri History Museum, a village walk, visit to a ‘shola’ forest and historic and scenic sites, a get-together with village folk and a campfire. Clean, spartan lodging and healthy food will be provided.

Advance booking can be made with the Nilgiri Documentation Centre, Sullivan Memorial, Kannerimukku, Kotagiri- 64371.
