Couples belonging to different religions and castes got married in a simple and expense-free wedding
|
Happy times The couples at the function
The wedding season is in full swing. In sharp contrast to the lavish manner in which India weddings are solemnised these days, the Guild of Service arranged low-cost marriages of 15 couples. Twelve Hindu and three Muslim couples were united in a g
roup wedding ceremony held recently in New Delhi. The Guild’s idea is to help people like widows and the poor, those who don’t have the financial and other resources to get married.
The Guild of Service does the groom hunting, provides a set of new clothes for the bride along with gifts such as a pressure cooker and a gas stove to each couple and the basic facilities to set up a new home. Twenty-four-year-old Mohammad Shehzad, an auto- rickshaw driver who married Ruksana Khatoon (22), thanked the Guild for helping him find his life partner. Counselors from the Family Planning Association were also called to counsel them on effective ways of family planning and use of contraceptives.
This organisation was set up in 1971 and has constantly undertaken such activities in the last 38 years.
They have to their credit shelter homes and family counselling centres. Dr. V. Mohini Giri, former Chairperson, National Commission for Women, has served as Chairperson of the Guild of Service since 1979.
