Thirty-five year old Anita Pal, a successful architect, a patient of Spina Bifida, a neurological disease affecting the lower limbs, looked radiant as she slowly walked with difficulty and took her seat. Practising at Noida and a recipient of the Go dfrey Philips Bravery Award two years ago, Anita has come a long way. “I have achieved a lot professionally and now I want to get married. Just because I am differently-abled doesn’t mean that I am not human. I have come here with the hope of finding my life partner,” said Anita. She and about 100 other specially-abled people gathered to find their better-halves at a meet organised in New Delhi by bharatmatrimony.com on its 12th anniversary.

A leading matrimony portal, bharatmatrimony.com, organised a similar meet in Mumbai too, and the portal plans to organise the event again in 2010.

Fifty-two-year-old Vishnu Kant Mishra, an Assistant Accounts Chief Officer suffering from paralysis of the legs, came from as far as Lucknow. “The distance doesn’t mean much to me. Society isolates special people and like everyone else, even special people dream of getting married.” In the first three hours, prospective brides and grooms went through the respective lists and approached the potential life-partners. The participants exchanged contact numbers, horoscopes and photographs of suitable matches for further communication.

Prem Prakash, spokesperson for bharatmatrimony.com, said, “Our society is not accustomed to meet the needs of special people. We are committed to making marriages happen for all sections of the society.”
