Rock on Suraj Mani and John with their awards
The rock band Motherjane, whose latest album ‘Maktub’ is making waves has added another feather to their collective caps. The Jack Daniels Rock awards, in association with Rolling Stones India, selected drummer John and lead vocalist Suraj Mani as the best in the said categories.
The competition was tough, Motherjane, comprising Baiju, Clyde, Deepu, John and Suraj had to compete with contestants who are among the best in the business. The jury consisted of the whole wide spectrum of rock music aficionados. Uday Benegal of Indus Creed, Mahesh Tinaiker of Indus Creed, Milind Deora (MP), Luke Kenny (former VJ and actor), Rudy Wallang of Soulmate, Nitin Malik of Parikrama, Anand Srinivasan of EMI - Virgin, Arjun Sankalia of Sony – BMG and Gaurav Sharma of Fever 104 FM. The band was nominated in categories such as band of the year, song of the year, male vocalist, album of the year among the other categories. The awards were given away at a function held at Hard Rock Café, Mumbai in February.
‘Maktub’ has been rated the best album by Rolling Stones India and the Rockstreet Journal in its 15th anniversary issue rated Motherjane as one of the best acts in India, in fact the Rockstreet Journal selected Motherjane as the ‘band of the year.’ “We were not even able to go to collect our awards, one of our fans collected the awards and we got to see it only when it came here,” says John.
On March 30, Motherjane was selected the Best International Rock Act at the Asia Voice Independent Music Awards (AVIMA) 2009 at Kuala Lumpur. The event was part of an initiative launched by Voize.my, a Malaysian lifestyle and entertainment portal. The band was selected from around 16 nominees from all over the region (Singapore, Philipines, Malyasia etc). Says Suraj Mani on the band’s website, “Some doors once opened can never be closed again. This is a big door. Judges from seven countries are now discussing gigs with Motherjane.”
