A festival of Slovakian films on May 4 and 5

TRAGICOMEDY "She kept crying for the Moon"

The Embassy of the Slovak Republic, New Delhi, the Indo Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chennai, and the ICA Foundation organise a Slovakian Film Festival on May 4 and 5 at the South Indian Film Chamber Theatre, 606, Anna Salai. Watch “She kept crying for the Moon” at 6.15 p.m., on May 4. The tragicomedy is based on a collection of short stories by Slovak writer, Milka Zimkova, about the lives of a single mother and her daughter, who seem to copy each other. The second film “If I had a Gun” will be screened later in the evening at 8 p.m. It tells the story of Vlado, an intelligent, cheerful boy whose fantasies eventually overtake the reality of the humdrum life in his village.

On May 5, 6.15 p.m., “The Sun in a Net” will be screened. A student who directs quasi existentialist verbal abuse at his girlfriend, takes off to a summer work camp on a farm. It inspires both of them to start a relationship with someone else. The story takes interesting turns.

At 7.45 p.m., “The Organ” wraps up the festival. A Polish military deserter, Brother Felix, takes shelter in a Franciscan monastery. He lands in the centre of a web of relationships that reveals the depth of hypocrisy, inanity, greed and psychological pressures that characterise life in the surrounding provincial town. The monastery’s superior discovers in Brother Felix an ability to “convey the beauty of holiness through music”, and arranges for him to play the organ in a local church. But differences arise between him and the regular choirmaster…
