American style diner All Spice
All Spice is well lit with snazzy lights. Colourful paintings deck a corner. The tables are spaciously arranged and the music, happening. A waiter is preparing a Coffee Ice Berg at the open kitchen for one of the customers. One feels like one has stepped into an American style diner.
And judging by the menu, one could be close. It has a large continental spread. What catches the eye is the variety of burgers with names that sound Yankee– Sloppy Joe (Rs. 69), Big Boy (Rs. 69) and Salad Burger (Rs. 35). A meal in itself, the burgers come with French fries and coleslaw. Jumbo burgers like the Jumbo Lamb Burger and Jumbo Ham Burger come triple decked, sandwiched with meat pate and a spread of vegetable julienne in mayonnaise.
Fried chicken platter
There is also a choice of KFC-like fried chicken. The Supreme Royal Fried Chicken (Rs. 89) has batter fried chicken and garlic bun, which goes great with the cocktail sauce. Children will probably enjoy the Supreme Boneless Royal Fried Chicken Strips (batter fried boneless chicken strips with cocktail sauce) and the Supreme Royal Snack (chicken nuggets, fish fingers, vegetable nuggets, potato wedges and French fries.)
Sandwich lovers need not fret as there is a range of sandwiches served starting from Chicken Club Sandwich (Rs. 55) to the Egg and Cheese Sandwich (Rs. 45).
Pizzas also feature in the menu. You have Murgh Makhani Pizza (chunks of chicken cooked in creamy Makhani gravy) and Kheema Supreme Pizza (spicy minced lamb with onion and capsicum) to name a few.
As one goes through the menu, one notices familiar Indian dishes like Murgh Tikka (Rs. 99) and Chicken Biriyani (Rs. 75). The biriyanis are must tries - fluffy basmati rice cooked the Malabari dum style with succulent pieces of meat and fragrant spices.
The joint offers a variety of combo meals which are value for money. Tharkari Thali (Rs. 89) has dal makhani, paneer makhani, a dry vegetable dish, vegetable pulau, lacha paratha, raitha and salad on a platter. Kebab Thali (Rs. 149) has varieties of kebabs served with lacha paratha, mint chutney and salad.
Chinese food lovers can try the Chinese Chicken Platter (pieces of chicken cooked in a slight sweet and sour gravy served with a choice of vegetable fried rice or noodles and a pickled vegetable salad) or the Chinese Vegetable Platter (vegetables in a Chinese sauce with a choice of vegetable fried rice or noodles and pickled vegetable salad).
To down your meal comes a long menu of drinks ranging from hot coffee to fresh juices. A softie machine vends creamy ice creams. Slices of chocolaty cakes are available too.
The eatery at Kuravankonam Road, opposite Welgate, is open Monday to Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 10.30 p.m.
All Spice is sister concern of Kollam-based Supreme Bakers, which has started a branch in the city. The branch is located on the ground floor of the All Spice building. Famous for its nadan eats, cakes, puffs, halwas and sweet treats, Supreme Bakers promises the same for customers in the city.
