Celebrating food, the Mexican way

The Tex Mex Food Festival looks at the brighter side of life

Exciting fare From the festival

For those who are missing out the Texan party, Rodeo in Connaught Place, brings the festive mood home with its Tex Mex Food Festival, ‘The Taste of Texas’.

Chef Michael Diaz has been flown in from the US to create authentic Mexican flavours. The soups are light and summery, the highlight being the tempting roasted vegetable tortilla soup.

Any kind of vegetable you can probably think of is probably in that soup. The biggest flavour component of the broth is the roasted tomatoes, lending it a rounded, robust character.

The freshly fried tortilla strips make for a good soup snack.

Lemony flavour

If you’ve ordered a portion of the chicken skewers from the appetisers and it looks like chicken satay to you, don’t be disappointed; the lemony flavour in the chicken and the tangy Serrano mayonnaise they are served with will re-assure you that you’re still in a Mexican restaurant.

The taquitos or the small tacos are crispy fried tortilla rolls with vegetarian and non-vegetarian fillings served with lettuce and sour cream.

The non-vegetarians could give camarones Mexicana (shrimp Mexican style) a try. It is a simple preparation of shrimp cooked in onion, capsicum, tomatoes, oregano, chilly flakes and a couple other herbs and is served with spinach and coriander rice. The ones for whom fish is a strict no-no can try the chicken mole which is made with authentic Mexican chillies and Mexican chocolate.

Then there is tamale, a great dish for the vegetarians, which is basically a corn flour paste made using vegetable stock and different spices and herbs.

As for the desserts one could go for the chocolate tamale which is a corn flour cake in the shape of t amales served with hazelnut caramel, chocolate sauce on top and sweet tortilla chips on the side.
