My father owns a Tata Indigo diesel. We now want to buy a new diesel car. Average run of the car is around 100-200km a day and the car will usually be driven by a chauffeur. Please suggest us a diesel car that would cost not more than Rs. 5 lakh. Our requirements are good fuel efficiency, low maintenance cost and resale value. Could you suggest other options? Should we go for the diesel Ford Ikon?

The diesel Swift Dzire LDi returns respectable fuel economy figures of 13.5kpl and 18.9kpl in the city and on the highway respectively. This car is wallet-friendly when it comes to maintenance, and it should have a decent resale value as well. The diesel Ford Ikon gives back approximately the same economy figures, and both cars have almost the same resale value. We think the diesel Dzire would be the best option for you.
I have been driving a car almost daily for 10 years. But now, I find it very difficult to drive in city traffic. Will going in for an automatic car solve my problem? If so do all the cars that come with automatic transmission cost more than the manual version? How about the fuel efficiency?

If comfort rather than performance is a priority for you, yes, an automatic car will definitely be better for you to drive around the city. Cars with automatic transmission cost more than their manual counterparts. With regard to fuel efficiency, automatic cars are more petrol/diesel-thirsty.
I want to buy a second-hand car. My budget is Rs. 2 to 2.5 Lakh. I would prefer going in for a Hyundai. Please suggest other options. What are the things I need to look for in the car?

A second-hand Hyundai Santro should fall well within your budget. If Hyundai doesn’t quite have what you’re looking for, you could always look at the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R or the Tata Indica. You should take a look at the car’s service history, the wear on the tyres, and check the colours of the cars panels in sunlight — to check if they were replaced after an accident — before purchasing the car.
