Green spaces The Mar Baselios college campus is vast enough for lots of hangout spots

The hangout: The cafeteria, the library, the amenity centre.
Where it’s at: The cafeteria is next to the library. The amenity centre is opposite the cafeteria.
Rush hour: Break time
What’s to love: Students of Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology prefer moving around their campus to sticking to any particular hangout. Perched atop the greenery of Bethany Hills, the 22-acre campus has many cosy places for friends to chill out.
The students say no matter how much they explore the campus, it never ceases to surprise them with its new cool zones for a quick powwow with classmates and buddies. Perfectly designed buildings, well-nurtured greenery and an uncluttered environment enhance the charm of the campus.
“The campus invites students to explore the place. So instead of huddling in one corner, I enjoy strolling around with my friends to make the most of our large campus. It took us almost a month to get a complete view of our campus,” says Celin Baby George, a first year student of IT.
Celin’s classmate Neethu Mariza Jeevan rushes to the cafeteria during the breaks. “It’s my favourite hangout. It is next to the College Library and, naturally, any one who comes to the library is attracted to the cafeteria. It has enough space for friends to get together.”
Echoing her sentiments Nisha Babu A. adds: “That’s 100 per cent true. It’s very difficult for visitors to the library to keep away from the yummies offered at the cafeteria. On the menu are fresh juice, soft drinks, puffs, hotdogs and noodles. I think the ‘Sharjah’ has the most number of takers. I love to chill out with my friends on the steps and by the corner of the cafeteria.”
But the guys here have a different take on their favourite hangouts.
“We hang out at the amenity centre, which is located opposite the canteen. We play badminton and cricket there during our breaks and after classes. Otherwise we just gather there for extended chat sessions,” says IT student Jayan Reghu, who is also a member of the under-17 cricket team.
Jayan’s friend Amal Joshy votes for the CCF Lab (Computer Centre Facility Lab). “The CCF Lab is just behind the library. Not only is it a comfortable chat zone but it also has Internet. So we can check our e-mails. Orkut is banned on our campus. ‘Entertainment plus studies’ is my policy,” he says.
What’s not to love: Although the college has a sprawling campus, its undulating layout is difficult to navigate, cribs Neethu. “As our college is right on top of the hill, it is quite exhausting to use the steps. But at the same time, it’s very amusing to run down the steps.” Celin also rues the lack of shade on the campus. “Even though our campus is quite green, by noon it gets hot outside and we are forced to take refuge inside the buildings.” Alternatives: While Celin and friends choose the ground near the basketball court in front of the main building, Neethu goes for the leafy mango groves. Nisha opts for the library. Jayan’s vote is for the dining-hall cum TV room of the men’s hostel.
