TRAVEL TIPS

For timeshare holidays

SUBHA J RAO

Want to spend holidays in great locations, but don’t want to be hassled with planning months in advance to book rooms? This is your best bet

What is a timeshare?

It is a plan whereby you buy a “share of time” in a resort or vacation home, for a fixed time every year till the plan is valid. You can opt for life-long membership or for a limited number of years. And, till then, you can use the vacation home, literally for free. Annual maintenance charges are levied, though.

Points to ponder

If you want a slot in a really popular holiday destination, you might have to book months in advance.

Since timeshare holidays involve some planning, they are not meant for those who like to take off on a break when they feel like.

There is a facility for exchanging holidays, but there are clauses.

You don’t necessarily get the kind of room you want.

You are stuck with one provider for life. Hence, choices are limited.

Check with the salesperson and get details of what you are entitled to, and not.

The benefits

Since you already own a fixed number of days or weeks at a resort or holiday home, you do away with the hassle of planning your annual holiday.

It is relatively insulated from inflation, because you have paid for it when you signed up for the programme.

As per the plan chosen, you can holiday wherever the company has a resort. In some cases, they have a tie-up with international brands too, so you could exchange your holiday in Ooty for one in Las Vegas!

Most timeshare resorts offer great facilities. Travelling with older people or kids? Use the attached kitchenettes to rustle-up homely meals for them.

Typically, you don’t have to pay for allied activities such as swimming, boating, or even horse-riding, like you would have had to if you had gone on your own.
