SENTHAMIL COLLEGE

The Hangout: Third year classroom benches.

Rush Hour: Whenever teachers are away.

Where it’s at: Next to the staff room on the first floor.

What’s to love: There are not many options, so we hang out here, saysR. Meenambikai.

As long as we friends are together, we don’t care where we sit and chat, B. Vanitha follows.

In classroom we enjoy every moment whenever teachers are away, adds on C.Prema.

As soon as we hear the footsteps of our professors (we can make out from the walking style and sound of the shoes or steps or from the silhouette of the teachers), we shakes ourselves out of our world of utopia, says S. Kodiarasi.

It is not unusual to see the students gathered in the classrooms much after the classes get over. They are all too eager to catch up on the latest gossip.

The talk could vary from something as frivolous as the outfit worn by a particular person, or the food they ate, or updating a friend on what happened in classroom when she took leave. They also discuss latest cinema releases, songs, comedy at length and stories of popular television serials and how the course of the story would move on.

Girls being girls, they cannot avoid talking about beauty tips and all the funny characters they bump into on the bus en route to college or while returning home.

What’s not to: Nothing specific. The college has rules which we can put up with as long as we friends remain united,” says K. Satya.

M. Muthuselvi, a Literature student admits it is not easy to bunk or cut classes as there are a very few hotspots within the campus. Also the lack of green canopies hardly leaves them with any option of having a private talk.

The students try to avoid talking about books and studies. Occasionally, they rue about the pathetic mix-up of Tamil and English language in a conversation.

Alternatives: The next best option is the canteen. Whenever we feel the need to walk, we come to the canteen, says Vanitha.
