Rock on, Chennai! the line-up

JRO 2009 will feature 15 bands and eclectic genres

It is that time of the year again when India’s best rock bands descend on Chennai. The occasion? The 11th edition of JRO, presented by Unwind Center, in association with Harmony Musical Instruments and Hi-Tours.

The JRO, to be held on July 3 and 4, will see eclectic genres such as Jazz Rock, Funk Rock, Blues, Alternative, metal and symphonic metal, and the finale band will be ‘Motherjane’ (Kochi). The band recently won the Asia Voice Independent Music Award for Best International Rock Act.

The event will be held at Bucks Theatre, Nandanam YMCA, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Passes that allow entry for both days cost Rs. 300; for July 3 Rs. 150 and for July 4 Rs. 200. Passes are available at all outlets of Fruit Shop On Greams Road, Landmark and all three Unwind Centers.

JRO stands for responsible rock. Starting from the musicians to the audience, the event is free from alcohol, drugs, cigarettes and foul language. The bands are also encouraged not to use the stage to promote any particular religion or political point of view. The community service cause of JRO involves raising awareness and finances towards a Widow Rehabilitation Centre being constructed at Vayaloor, Mahabalipuram. Eventually, 32 homes will be built where widows and their children can stay for a period of five years.

The LIVE Awards, instituted in memory of former Moksha vocalist Leon Ireland, will also be given away during the JRO.

The award will be given to the ‘Outstanding Vocalist of the Year 2008’ selected from across India. For details, visit www.unwindcenter.com or call 98413-79494 / 65379572.
