Spectacular view Get ready for a new sailing event

With monsoon winds blowing strongly across the wide expanse of the Hussainsagar lake, the sailing enthusiasts of the twin cities are gearing up to take to the waters . And this year a new sailing event, the likes of which has not been seen in Hyderabad before, is being planned in August.

Unique venue

Veteran sailor Suheim Sheikh who has sailed in many parts of the world says that this lake is unique. "Very few sailing venues are located in the middle of a city. And the location is advantageous in two ways - firstly from the spectators point of view, since anybody passing by on the Tank Bund road or Necklace road can stop and watch the competition, and secondly from the competitor's point of view, it means that he or she does not have to transport the boat and other equipment over long distances to the venue. It has the potential to become a leading venue for international sailing," he says.

Suheim also adds, "This year for the first time in the twin cities, we will witness a large Catamaran Inland National Championship and the title will be decided here. The event will be held from August 11 to 16."

"We have received permission from the Match Racing Association of India and the Indian Navy for some big boat racing with the import of a few J24 Class super yachts, which are 24 feet in length and can accommodate a crew of up to six members. Such races will be held for the first time outside of Bombay. We expect four world champions in yachting to attend the meet," he says. "Additionally for kids below 16 we are staging an Open Championship in the Optimist Class and expect entries from all the Sailing centres in India like Munbai, Goa, Vizag, Chennai, Cochin and Bhopal. ' The sight of these sophisticated big boats, small boats and Catamarans will be the first ever of its kind and is likely to attract a lot of attention since there are several vantage points like Necklace Road and Tank Bund," says Suheim.

The principal host will be the Secunderabad Sailing Club, the Annexe of the Secunderabad Club and other involved bodies include Yachting Association of India, Match Racing Association of India, Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh, Artillery Water Sports Association, EME Sailing Association and the Yacht Club of Hyderabad.
