Flights of fancy

Jessin Kabbir’s painting of her thoughts on Germany, won her an all-expenses paid trip to the country

For Jessin Kabbir, the paintbrush is a means for others to enter her world. Take for example her painting ‘Germany in my mind,’ where she did just that.

“I have read about Germany in my textbooks. Travelogues on television have also helped build images of Germany in my mind. I then let my imagination take flight,” says the petite 17-year-old, whose painting won her an all-expenses paid trip to Germany. In the painting, Jessin has juxtaposed scenes from Germany with depictions of various personalities from the country. So you have Michael Schumacher, Einstein and Beethoven lending colour to the already colourful frame.

Artist at heart

A native of Nedumangad, Jessin has always loved to paint. “I started painting when I was three. At least that is what my parents say,” smiles the girl shyly. She polished her skills at Children’s Academy and Chitrakalamandalam.

Her paintings are “usually what comes to mind.” However, she admits to having a bend towards landscapes and contemporary issues.

Jessin will be leaving for Germany on July 3. “It’s really exciting,” says Jessin, who is travelling abroad for the first time. The competition organised by Goethe-Zentrum Trivandrum, also provided her the opportunity to learn a new language. “In fact, I passed the beginners course. In Germany, I will be undergoing a three-week course in the German language. Apart from academics, the organisers will also be taking us around the country,” says Jessin, who is also an avid photographer. A recipient of the Balashree Award for creative arts, Jessin, who has completed her Plus Two from Government Cotton Hill Girls’ High School is looking forward to pursuing her ambition of becoming an architect. “But I will still keep alive my love for the paint brush. And I will also take up photography too.”
