Hangout spot Students at Teachers Training College like to hang out in or near the main building
Government College of Teacher Education, Thycaud
The Hangout: General lecture hall, Model School canteen
Where its at: General lecture hall is inside the main building; the canteen is adjacent to the campus.
Rush Hour: All throughout the day in the hall and 11 a.m. at the canteen.
What’s to love: Ironically, it’s a ‘student-free’ campus at the Government College of Teacher Education, Thycaud. On this campus being a student means that you are a teacher too.
And that means no hanging out and no bunking class.
“We know that we are not just students, but future teachers as well. As it is a one-year course, the syllabus is packed. We generally do not have time to hangout although we do manage to find a few minutes between classes. So I can’t point out a general hotspot,” says Devi S.R., a second semester student.
But Lathika Pillai I.P. says that the cosy corners and corridors of the main building are ideal hangout spots for a quick get-together.
“Our campus shares its compound with the Model School. The school canteen is open to us too since we do not have one of our own. That’s where we all go to have a munch,” she says. Located near the tenth standard block of the Model School, the tiny canteen is packed with students of the college by around 11 a.m. The canteen’s yummy ‘bondas,’ coconut-filled ‘undas’ and old wooden benches have many takers.
Anju S.R. opines that the top spot goes to the general lecture hall inside the main building.
“I think the hall is our special place. It is our classroom, lecture hall, hangout place and sometimes even dining room. We spend most of our time here whether we have a class or not,” says Anju. Priya K. loves the circular seating arrangements in the hall and the ‘song sessions’ conducted during the free hours.
What’s not to love: “No time and no space for hangouts,” rues Devi S.R. “It’s not easy to find space for our gatherings. Our campus is just our classroom, lecture-hall and library on the first floor,” say Anju S.R and Priya K.
Alternatives: “The library comes to our aid if and when we are fed up of sitting in the general lecture hall or at the canteen. It has an amazing collection of old and new books and periodicals,” says Soumya Mohan A.M. about the library located opposite the staff-room.
Anju S.R. and Priya K. love the stroll to the optional-class building beside the main block. “It is during those stolen moments that we share some gossip,” they say with a chuckle.
