Stick with the starters

Eating out Try the new menu at Hotel Rathna Regent

Forrest Gump’s mother would definitely have found Rathna Regent’s new menu like a box of chocolates. You never know what you get. Well, for one, there’s so much to choose from, if you aren’t full with the starters.

The best bet is to stick with the starters. The Kozhi Malli Peralan (coriander flavoured chicken) is a yummy dish of chicken legs. It has a nice earthy aroma and goes wonderfully well with the monsoon. The Masala fried fish is also nice and is a meal in itself. The chef has resisted the temptation of letting spices loose on it. It wears a beautiful red and tastes wonderful.

The tortillas, done with rotis, have an interesting blend of chicken and chilly as fillings which pushes you to gluttony. What’s nice about the starters is that they are meals by themselves.

The joys and horrors of reviewing food lie in going through as much of the spread as possible. The Regent really lets you push the limits of your appetite to find that one great dish to write about. It’s a pity when these limits are lost in the buffet.

The buffet has the regular spread of soups, biriyani, noodles, fried rice, mutton curry and so on. This buffet also has a lot of spinach. The Veg Saagwala is a mix of vegetables drowned in spinach gravy. An interesting discovery is the Spinach Manchurian. It is a dish of spinach pakodas, fried lightly, and is a good substitute to your regular vadaas. However, it’s a tad salty. You may want to learn how to make it.

The salads are the regular fare with loads of cottage cheese (paneer) everywhere. The biriyani too is worth a try. On the whole, the buffet is a regular, safe bet. The dessert table is an assortment of the nicer things in life. Pineapple gateaux, cocktail mousse, pastries and sago payasam, to name a few. Go for the fruit salad with ice cream and chocolate sauce. Have as much of it as you can, if it makes you feel better about the buffet. For reservations call 9894093637
