The watercolours capture life

Still life Caught in the act of life
Slices of rustic life have an arresting quality. See them at the Shrishti Art Gallery and they stick to the mind. Rajkumar Sthabathi captures these in watercolours bringing a photographic quality to them. In the process, we get a documentary of life in Kerala whose appeal is local at times and universal at other times when you see the people staring back at the artist captured in arresting poses.
Rajkumar uses the inner luminescence of water colours and the waterwash techniques to transform his subjects: chatting, waiting for the bus (there is no bus on the horizon but you can makeout from the pose of the people), or the clutch of women hitching a ride in an open trolley. The background is bright white with a hint of blue that suggests the ever present clouds in Kerala. Rajkumar places his subjects in the foreground in all their resplendent colour and glory, the bright sunlight falling on the dark subject creates a stunning play of light and shade.
The subjects are chosen randomly and in this randomness is the essence of life and the art of Rajkumar.
