Dev’s mental disability doesn’t come in the way of his passion for sports

“Nothing is Impossible,” Sachin Tendulkar often reminds ambitious cricketers wanting to make it big. And here is a youngster, who is passionate about his cricket and is willing to overcome all handicaps to achieve his goal.

Dev Dhingra is suffering from cerebral palsy (a kind of mental disability) since birth but has very strong will and determination. He loves to play cricket and is currently engaged in learning the finer points from Rakesh Rai, his coach at the Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan. To Rai’s credit, he has always encouraged Dev to compete with normal children and feel proud of it too. “I want him to feel as normal as anyone else. The idea is to create the right platform for him to pursue his cricket,” says Rai. Dev is a student of Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan and has passed class 10 from National Open School.

Dev has also learnt computers well and has improved his bowling technique by watching video clips of greats like Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan. Dev has also won many medals in skating at the State level under the aegis of Bharat Special Olympics. He has also visited Bangladesh as a scorer of the Bharat Special Olympic Indian Cricket team.

The biggest encouragement for Dev has come from his parents — Anil Dhingra and Lata. They look forward to the day when their enthusiastic and special child would make a mark in the sporting arena.
