THEY SAID IT

Preparedness matters

Bad news travels faster than good. The hype has led to fear. More than panic, what matters is preparedness to handle the situation. The regular seasonal flu kills thousands of people every year, so does tuberculosis. But it’s not reported. Also, schools don’t close down nor do people wear masks. Maintaining personal hygiene is the key to avoid any kind of illness.

Ignore rumours

It is the combination of all three: the media hype, fear over its endemic nature and the reality of increasing casualities. WHO warns that nearly 30 per cent of people will be infected globally in the coming years. We need to be more careful in winter, which contributes to the spread of swine flu. There are reports that swine flu virus is suspected to be a hybrid of human, avian and swine components and there is no natural immunity to this. So, it is not surprising to see people wearing masks and queuing up to buy preventive medicine without knowing its effectiveness. Pay no heed to rumours.

Survival of the fittest

Another war between microbes and mankind! With increasing population it is important to treat public places as your home and avoid spitting, peeing or throwing garbage. It also proves the Darwinian theory of ‘Survival Of The fittest’. So adopt clean habits and also, keep stress at bay.
