Eunic treat

Six films from the Europe Union National Institute for Culture


The Austrian Cultural Forum (Austrian Embassy), New Delhi and Indo-Cine Appreciation Foundation are organising an Eunic (Europe Union National Institute for Culture) film festival from November 9 to 13 at the South Indian Film Chamber theatre, Anna Salai.

Gudrun Hardmann-Pollross, director of the Australian Cultural Forum, New Delhi, will inaugurate the festival.

The festival will open with “All the Queen’s Men (Austria) at 6.30 p.m. The film is about how during World War II the British wanted the German Enigma, the typewriter-like machine that constructs and sends coded messages.

On day two (November 10, 6.30 p.m.) watch “Mondays in the Sun” (Spain). The movie tells the story of five friends and former shipyard workers after their severance pay has run out.

On November 11, “L’america” (Italy) will be screened at 6.30 p.m. A pair of Italian conmen travel to Albania in the aftermath of Communism’s collapse, hoping to take advantage of the ravaged economy.

On November 12 watch “The Witness”, 6.30 p.m. (Hungary). The film follows the life of an ordinary dike keeper, who has been caught for illegaly slaughtering his pig.

“Emma’s Bliss” will be screened (Germany) on November 13 at 6.15 p.m. The film is about how Max after getting the bad news that he is soon to die of cancer, wants to escape to the beautiful Mexico. But when he accidentally lands at Emma’s pig farm, he realises that true happiness waits just around the corner.

The festival will close with “Julgamento” (Portugal), which will be screened at 8 p.m.. In 1970, a man is tortured by the regime’s secret police. Nearly 40 years later, his friend, who had also been tortured, recognises the man he deems responsible for the murder of his friend.
