FORMED 2009
LINE-UP Rahul Nambiar and Aalaap Raju
WHAT THEY CALL IT Music beyond genres
ROAD SO FAR “Chance brought us together,” says Rahul. Aalaap and Rahul met through a common friend for a one-off jamming session. “While we had similar tastes in music, there was a world of difference in our approach,” he adds. “What started off as a casual conversation on relationships, emotions and life in general, sparked the idea of creating an album that conveyed human emotions in different states,” says Alaap Raju.
The two formed Rahlaap and launched earlier in September. “The launch happened at the Alliance Francaise with a line-up of Allwyn Jeyapaul on percussion, Matt Littlewood on sax, Jeoraj on drums, Aalaap on bass, Keba Jeremiah on guitars, and Shyam Benjamin on keys and piano,” Rahul recalls.
“We did a mix of popular and film music, including Sting, Jamiroquai, and even Junoon and Avial,” he adds. The band is now ready with a self-titled album, recorded with live instruments. “We are doing a ten-city tour to promote the album. The way to sell music has changed. We cannot use the TV anymore because they are busy promoting reality shows. We have to perform live, get followers and only then, will we be able to sell our music.”
The band promoted itself through social networking sites and notched up over a 1,000 fans on Facebook within a month.
MUSIC “Raquib Aalam who writes for A.R. Rahman has written three songs for us. We have done the album in Hindi to get a wider reach, but we are planning to do the same album in Tamil and Malayalam.”
