Of poetry and grace

captivating “Wasteland”

E very dance lover knows that only two things matter, whether it is Bharatanatyam, Waltz or Hip Hop — grace and poetry. And, Karfig Company lent meaning to the two at the Bonjour India Festival of France held at Lady Andal School. Through the programme, France, known for its noble culture, demonstrated that its new generation of artists is as brilliant as its glorious veterans — the show had the audience in thrall.

Composed by Marion Carriau, Derradji Bounechada, Mohamed Rouabah, David Rodrigues, Mickael Arnaud, Jennifer Suire, Rémi Autechaud, Abdelkader Belmoktar, Benjamin Lebreton, Jonnathan Girard and Cécile Robin, and directed by Mourad Merzouki, the Company has a profusion of talent. Grace is a fragile thing, and hard to reach, because it is based on movement and rhythm. The Karfig Company's members, thanks to their genie hip-hop, were able to achieve harmony and grace of movement outside a classical dance form. Blending break dance movements and Flamenco dance steps, the virtuosos deserved the standing ovation!

But, dance cannot exist without a good story. And, “Wasteland”, because of its emptiness and desolation, was the perfect place to express feelings without any limitation. Karfig means ‘cage' in both Arabic and German. In this French “Wasteland”, everything moved subtly and deliciously, creating a wonderfully poetic story — a cage from which no one wanted to escape.
