TV soaps are a bane to society. Most prime-time mega serials have women playing the central role, which is comforting, as movies hardly offer such scope to actresses. But before we pat the creators of the serials, look at what they have made women in the serials do. Daughters-in-law are either shown as cheating and lying or are submissive. Mothers-in-law are either constantly plotting to do away with the daughters-in-law or are being harassed. As a woman, I protest strongly against this kind of stereotyping as it shows women in a very bad light. Very few soaps have woman playing positive and strong characters. But I can only protest by not watching serials as these mega serials are here to stay and the rest of the world will keep watching.
