Triple treat

A retrospective of Gowri Ramnarayan's plays

Kalidasa recreated A scene from “One Day in Ashadha”

The Madras Players, in association with JustUs Repertory, present a retrospective of playwright-director Gowri Ramnarayan's plays — “Rural Phantasy”, “Flame of the Forest”, and “One Day In Ashadha” — on July 2, 3, and 4, respectively.

“Rural Phantasy”, a musical comedy based on a short story by Kalki Krishnamurti, explores the passions in the hearts of young men in a sleepy village in Thanjavur when a beautiful firebrand, a Calcutta-returned Pudumai Penn brimful of reformist ardour, enters their lives.

Inspired by Kalki's novel Sivakamiyin Sapatham, and the sculptural marvels of Mamallapuram, “Flame of the Forest” front-stages playwright and philosopher-king Mahendra Pallava's quandary and the tragic romance of Mamalla, the Pallava prince, and the court dancer Sivakami through dialogue, music, and dance.

Six scenes from Kalidasa classics ( Sakuntalam, Kumarasambhavam and Meghasandesam) interlace “One Day in Ashadha”, written by modern Hindi playwright Mohan Rakesh and translated by V. Ramnarayan.

The plays will be staged at 3 p.m. and 7.15 p.m. at Sivagami Pethachi Auditorium. The plays feature P.C. Ramakrishna, V. Balakrishnan, Akhila Ramnarayan, Varun Iyer, R. Sunandha, S. Vidyuth and Sreelatha Vinod.

The plays will be performed to live music by T.M. Krishna, Sangeetha Sivakumar, Amritha Murali and Arun Prakash. The dance is by Priyadarshini Govind, Anjana Anand, G. Narendra and Sheejith Krishna.

Donor passes are priced at Rs. 100, Rs. 200 and Rs. 300 (daily), while the season passes are priced at Rs. 500 and Rs. 800. For reservation, call 93819-11977 and 98400-80783.
