Coded dressing?
No sleeveless tops, no low-waist jeans and of course no tight clothes — strict dress code is an unavoidable fact of life that most college students have to face today. The issue of dress codes being imposed in colleges has been endlessly debated. In Bangalore there have been many instances where dress codes have been imposed.
MetroPlus spoke to city residents to find out what they thought were the pros and cons of dress codes in colleges. Some argued that dress codes are important to instil discipline among college students, while others said that imposing dress codes is tantamount to restricting one's freedom of expression.
Some blamed the media for encouraging youngsters today to dress ‘indecently', arguing that dress codes are important to ensure the security of students. Some felt that youngsters today are increasingly becoming ‘westernised' which is damaging India's cultural ethos. The youth, however, said that colleges should not impose dress codes as it is a violation of students' rights, and that such rules are imposed in regressive societies.
Earlier, there was not much discrimination between the rich and poor, but today the scenario is very different. Therefore, dress codes should be imposed to ensure that there is no discrimination against poor students. Nobody should feel left out.

I do not think there should be any restrictions on college students. It is not right to tell college students what to do or what clothes they should wear. They are responsible adults and colleges should treat them that way.

Today, youngsters are getting more exposure due to the media, which is proving to be detrimental. Youngsters prefer to dress like film stars, but they fail to understand reality. The colleges should control this trend for the good of the students. Tarun

Dress codes are important for it helps discipline students. Colleges should not just target one student and impose restrictions on him or her; rather the basic rules need to be imposed.
Students would benefit from such rules.
