Petpals

So, you've decided to bring home a new pet? It's a time of joy and also the time to make careful decisions that will help you and the pet-to-be.

Before the first step is taken, the factors to be considered are our climate, problems caused by selective breeding and the impact of our choices on society.

In recent times, more and more people are avoiding pedigree breeders and are instead getting their companion animals from shelters or the street. The benefits of this strategy are many.

Firstly, shelters and streets are home to Indian puppies with short fur coats that are perfect for our tropical climate. Unlike many foreign breeds that suffer in the heat, these dogs thrive in India. The second plus point in adopting an Indian breed is that it has not been selectively bred. The risk of the pup developing genetic defects due to inbreeding is non-existent.

Victims of the pedigree pet trade suffer problems like hip dysplasia, breathing difficulties and heart attacks. Indian pups have stronger immune system as they are used to our environment – this means fewer trips to the vet and a longer life span. Another reason why people go for adoption is to show their kindness to the animal world. They are bringing home a pet and at the same time, making a difference to a homeless animal. Going for natural breeds also protects foreign breeds from exploitation.

Dr. C. Palanikumar, Honorary Secretary, PFA Madurai Unit has worked on several campaigns that focus on suitability of local breeds as pets. He says: “A German Shepherd in Germany is a local dog. In India, it is a foreign dog. Our Indian mongrels are also lovable, trustworthy companions”.

His own Indian dogs are proud members of his family, and are proof that all dogs, regardless of breed, are our best friends.
