Designer Gaurav Chhabra on why every sherwani is important
|
WHAT'S ON YOUR SHOULDER? A sherwani by Gaurav Chhabra
Riding solely on the sherwani, designer Gaurav Chhabra has made a name for himself.
Chhabra, who recently launched his wedding range, says every outfit is a work of art.
“I take special care with every single sherwani. I listen to the customer and his needs and then customise it, which is our speciality. For me it might just be another sherwani, but for him it may be his only sherwani,” he explains. Makes sense.
After working with several clothing brands for some years, Chhabra set up his label GOC, which now retails from stores like Simaya, Millionaire, Jade Blue, Origins and Meena Bazaar, across Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ludhiana, Ahmedabad and Kolkata. He also sells from his factory outlet in Okhla, New Delhi.
Previously, Chhabra has also designed uniforms for automobile companies like Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Maruti Udyog for the Auto Expo in the Capital.
Besides specialising in wedding attire, he also designs Indo-Western and Western outfits.
Chhabra concedes that how one wears an outfit is the make-or-break factor. “Even an outfit with very good fabric and design will not look good if you do not carry it the way it should be. So, for me, it is the most important thing.”
Pure silk is Chhabra's preferred material. In fact, fabric, he says, is the point where his creative process starts.
“Normally, I do not have designs in my mind but they come automatically when the fabric is in front of me.
Chhabra's wedding range is priced between Rs. 20,000 and Rs.3 lakh.
