Communicating for the right outcomes
Many of us think that communication is a mindless activity. But if we need a specific feedback, the sender has to be fully aware about the purpose (sometimes there are many of them) and the outcome (both immediate and final). Some of the outcomes that we may desire are: to create the right impression, to be understood, and to motivate.
Let us explore some more of them.
We spend a good part of our life trying to persuade someone to do or not to do something. It could be something as simple as getting your friend to come for a movie with you when he/she is not very keen. And if you succeed in getting your friend to accompany you, you are a successful communicator.
Convincing someone through your communication is tricky because you need to base it on some fact or evidence. Besides, the receiver has to believe in it or have an element of trust. To convince someone you may have to go through the process of motivating and persuading and finally that person maybe convinced.
Whether it is an idea, concept, product, or service you will have to eventually sell and only then you will get your feedback.
Imagine selling a pen to a buyer. The following is the process:
Impress – create the right impression (and keep maintaining it); inform; share; create awareness; educate (at times); gather his view/needs; motivate; persuade; convince, and then sell.
And if it is a cold call (where there is no need and you have to ‘create' a need) then it really is an uphill task!
Now rate yourself:
How prepared are you for communicating effectively?
As a sender –
Do you have the right attitude, a constant high level of confidence?
Do you have an open mind?
Do you have empathy for yourself and for others (Do you know your needs as well needs of others)?
Are you good at listening? Is your knowledge of your domains high and do you have a high general awareness?
Is your mind clear and calm?
Is your mind strong (Filled with happy and positive thoughts )?
If your answer is ‘yes' to the above you are an effective sender with an excellent source and the ability to encode perfectly.
