Lilting Tharangini
SRI KRISHNA Leela Tharangini of Sri Narayana Tirtha is acknowledged as the longest and finest Nritha Natika (dance drama) in Sanskrit. Blending prose, verse and drama exquisitely, the entire work sparkles with fine diction and figures of speech.
The Gitams are replete with ideas from the Upanishads. It is believed that just like in the case of Sri Narayaneeyam, Lord Krishna recognised and acknowledged the bhakti of Sri Narayana Tirtha by dancing to the lilting tunes of his tarangams. Sri Narayana Tirtha attained Siddhi at Thirupoonthuruthy, a village near Varahur, on the banks of River Kudamurutti on Masi Sukla Ashtami, Guruvaram and star Krittikai.
The Aradhana of this great saint-composer has been celebrated on that day for over 200 years, by local devotees with the support of landlords.
In 1965, a regular Aradhana Committee was formed and in 1986 the Thirupoonthuruthy Sri Narayana Tirtha Swamigal Trust, was established (Ph: 24936671).
The Trust conducts two functions every year at Thirupoonthuruthy Gokulashtami and Aradhana for three days; and two more at Chennai the Jayanti and Tarangini Music Festival in December each three days.
An important activity of the Trust is the honouring of a Bhagavathar in December during the pre-music season Tarangini festival every year for his/ her services to namasankirtanam. This year on December 6, the Trust will honour T. E. Kasturi Ranga Bhagavathar at the inaugural function. The three-day celebration includes musical programmes and harikathas.
